A very popular alternative to Botox® is Dysport® for the treatment of unwanted facial wrinkles and creases. Dysport® has been around since approximately 2009 and has since become an increasingly desirable option for our San Diego medical spa patients.

Dysport® works in an identical manner to Botox® in terms of how the muscle is treated and how the wrinkles are reduced to create a smoother complexion. This means that Dysport® is frequently used for forehead wrinkles, glabellar creases and lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines and vertical smoker lines around the mouth.

The actual botulinum toxin is different than Botox®, but, for the most part, patients getting Dysport® treatment wouldn’t really know the difference between the two cosmetic procedures. Dysport® does diffuse in a slightly different manner than Botox®, which means that it can spread around a bit more under the skin. But as long as you are getting injected by an expert Dysport® provider, like we have at our medical spa, this characteristic of Dysport® shouldn’t really be a factor in your final cosmetic outcome.

Dysport® Cost Versus Botox®

So what about the cost of Dysport® compared to Botox®? In some medical spas, you will find that the price of these two leading wrinkle reducers is very different. In our office, we feel very strongly that Dysport® and Botox® provide a very similar cosmetic improvement for facial wrinkles. Therefore, we have priced each of these so that they are essentially equivalent in terms of patient cost per treatment.

Now this doesn’t mean that Dysport® and Botox® are the same price per unit. In order to better understand unit pricing for cosmetic neurotoxin treatment, please refer to our discussion regarding Botox® pricing. Dysport® is actually about 1/3 of the price of Botox® on a per unit basis. However, given the biological properties of Dysport®, patients need three times the number of units. Think of it, simply, that 1 unit of Botox® is the equivalent of 3 units of Dysport®. Because of this fact, our medical spa prices Dysport® at 1/3 of the price of Botox® so that patients don’t have to choose their preferred neurotoxin based on pricing.
