What is a Botox® Lip Flip?

In essence, the way this type of lip flip works is by modulating the movement of the lip muscle so that the lip appears more pouty and youthful. This is done by injecting the Botox® into the superficial (shallow) layer of the orbicularis oris muscle. This is the oval-shaped muscle that allows you to purse your lips. If a doctor or nurse injects the most shallow layer of this muscle, the deeper portion of the orbicularis oris can still continue to move and function. It is this shift in the muscle activity that allows the area of the lip along the vermillion border (where the red and white lip meet) to curl up and out. Visually this results in the vermillion border ‘flipping’ or rolling out to give the appearance of fuller lips.
